The young born each year, in litters ranging from one to eleven, remain with their mothers for only four to seven weeks before heading out on their own. These solitary animals typically couple only for mating. They remain active all year in more temperate locations. In deserts, they sleep through heat and drought in a similar process called aestivation. They usually sleep in this position during the day and awaken to search for food at night. If attacked they will curl into a prickly and unappetizing ball that deters most predators. Hedgehogs have a coat of stiff, sharp spines. While on the hunt, they rely upon their senses of hearing and smell because their eyesight is weak. Some people consider hedgehogs useful pets because they prey on many common garden pests. As a hedgehog picks its way through the hedges it emits piglike grunts-thus, the hedgehog. These animals root through hedges and other undergrowth in search of the small creatures that compose the bulk of their diet-insects, worms, centipedes, snails, mice, frogs, and snakes. The hedgehog was named because of its peculiar foraging methods.

Tricycle Talks is a podcast series featuring leading voices in the contemporary Buddhist world. Wright also speaks about how the Buddhist ideas of interconnectedness and not-self can help us navigate a time of “fake news” and divisiveness. In the talk, Wright explains why we haven’t evolved past difficult emotions such as anxiety and how mindfulness meditation can provide a way to work through-and maybe even free us from-them. In this episode of Tricycle Talks, Tricycle’s web editor, Wendy Joan Biddlecombe, speaks with Wright about how evolutionary psychology supports what the Buddha taught us about suffering and not being satisfied in the present moment. Released in August 2017, Why Buddhism is True: The Science and Philosophy of Meditation and Enlightenment quickly became a New York Times bestseller and captured the attention of the mainstream media as well as “secular” readers interested in how meditation might help them interact with the modern world. Robert Wright has written a book that many people far beyond the Buddhist crowd want to get their hands on. If you would like to support this offering, please consider donating. Even though it’s a very different story from The Martian, he makes it just as much fun and really shows his versatility without sacrificing the realism of hard sci-fi. His story is both compelling and well-researched, with the characters and the science and technology of living on the Moon driving the story in equal parts. In Artemis, Andy Weir is still in top form. After flunking her moonwalking test that she needed to supplement her tight income, she is approached for a much bigger and more lucrative job, and she soon descends into a web of political intrigue with the fate of the entire Moon hanging in the balance. In the late 2080’s, Jasmine “Jazz” Bashara is a porter (and part-time smuggler) in Artemis, the Moon’s one and only city, a short distance south of the Apollo 11 landing site. While The Martian is a one-man tale of survival on Mars, Artemis is a high-stakes caper on the Moon. Artemis is another space-based adventure for the one-time computer programmer, but he takes it in a different direction this time. What emerged from the data, as Brené often says, was that emotion is made up of four. It’s not always easy to find, but it’s there. Brown’s solution to this lack of emotional attunement was to pull together a research team of professionals within the mental health field to distill down the most fundamental basic emotions we all experience and to define them. “But the shore isn’t something outside of us - the solid ground we’re seeking is within us. “When fear, anxiety, and uncertainty leave us feeling adrift and untethered in our lives, our first instinct is to look out into the distance to find the nearest shore,” says Brown. Brown wants to give viewers a new framework for developing meaningful connection. So think Inside Out, but with professional narration.
